The building
The new Huarte Contemporary Art Centre presents itself as an
interactive space for exhibits and social activities that can be
constantly expanded, modified and restructured. In this sense, the
building is not merely an art container, but acts as a support for
multiple cultural activities.
The interior of the building, which has 6,500 m2 at its disposal, holds
the exhibit halls. Distributed through three levels, it is a neutral
and bright space that adapts to the requirements of each exhibit. The
ground floor is organized around a foyer that connects the multipurpose
hall, the media library, the cafeteria-restaurant and the access to the
upper floors.
The exterior has a metallic net covering which marks the open-air
activity space; projections, temporary exhibits, musical acts,
celebrations and public engagements. The use of this space changes
throughout the year with the change in season and permits an
interaction between the visitor and the natural surroundings.
The Huarte Contemporary Art Centre is a work by the Catalonian
architects Franc Fernández de Eduardo, Carles Puig and Xavier Vancells,
who have carried out different projects jointly like the remodelling of
the Palacio de Deportes of Barcelona into a Music Theatre, finalist in
the FAD Architecture Awards or the new Town Hall of Sant Cugat del
Vallés (Barcelona).
